DETAILED SHAOLIN RETREAT SCHEDULE

FIRST GROUP

Dates:

July 14th to August 4th (3 weeks)

Cost

15,300 Yuan (can be paid in US Dollars or Euros, based on the exchange rate as of July 14, 2011). Approximate exchange rates as of March, 2011 are 1EUR = 8.8 Yuan and 1 USD = 6.5 Yuan.

Detailed Program Schedule:

July 14th, 2011: Arrive to Beijing

Arrival to Beijing, registration of participants. Check-in time is noon. Retreat participants should arrange their own transport from the airport to the hotel (detailed information regarding Beijing taxi service will be published later)

· Double room – 1 person, available with single-use surcharge (TBD)

July 15th, 2011: Travel to Shaolin

Check out time from hotel is at 8.00 a.m. Arrival at Shaolin area is planned around 9 p.m. The majority of the group travels by bus. The bus-ride to Shaolin takes about 12 hours.

You may also fly to Zhengzhou 郑州 (cost not included in retreat price). Traveling by air costs about $100-120 US Dollars, each way. Flying is recommended for those who may get sick on long journeys or for the elderly participants. You can also book your own airfare directly to Zhengzhou 郑州 from your home country. The organizers can send a taxi to pick you up at the airport upon your arrival. Last year, the taxi-fare from the airport in Zhengzhou to Shaolin was about 400 Yuan.

July 15th, 2011: Settling into the hotels in Shaolin.

Accommodations in Shaolin

You can choose between two hotels in Shaolin area.

A. Hotel Dharma (3 stars) (our usual accommodation)

Dharma hotel is where the majority of the group stays, and it is where the retreat lectures with Grandmaster Xu Mingtang are held. Last year the Dharma hotel renovated rooms on the lower floors (1, 2, 3). Rooms on the upper floors (4,5,6) remain in the same condition as before. The prices of the renovated rooms are raised due to the renovation. The non-renovated rooms in Dharma Hotel do not have any extra charge.

B. Hotel Zen (a new hotel) (4 stars)

Hotel Zen is located a short walk from Hotel Dharma. It is located on the road between Dharma and Shaolin Monastery (closer to the Monastery). Note, morning practice takes place at the gates of Shaolin Monastery.

July 16th – July 31st: Retreat at Shaolin Classes start on July 16th at 3 p.m. Training ends on July 31st at 3 p.m.

July 31st: Departure from Shaolin Temple to Beijing

Additional program includes: sight-seeing trips in Beijing, a gala dinner in honor of the completion of the retreat, free time for shopping and sight-seeing.

August 1st: Beijing

9:00 a.m.: Tour to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

5:00 p.m: Trip to Chinese Circus

7:00 p.m.: Banquet dinner at restaurant, including Peking Duck

August 2nd: Great Wall & Summer Palace

8:00a.m: Tour to the Great Wall and Summer Palace (entire day trip)

August 3rd: Beijing

Free day for shopping, or a visits to temples, Beijing baths complex, etc. List of attractions will be provided to each retreat participant

August 4th – Departure

Check out by noon.

August 6th - August 27th:  Rereat at Shaolin.

Classes start on August 6th, at 3 pm. Retreat ends on August 27th, at 3 pm.

August 27th:  Travel to Beijing

Departure from the Shaolin Temple to Beijing. Majority of the group travels by an overnight bus, arriving to hotel in Beijing at 8:00 am the next morning. Again, you have the the option to purchase an airplane ticket to Beijing instead. If you are traveling to Beijing by plane, departure from Shaolin is on August 28th at either 8:40 am or 9:50 am. Arrival to Beijing is around 11 am.

August 28th: Free Day in Beijing & Banquet

In the evening at 7: 00 p.m. we will have a banquet/gala dinner to honor the completion of the retreat, including feasting on a Peking Duck.

August 29th: Beijing

Free day for shopping, or a visits to temples, Beijing baths complex, etc.

Additional Information

Next year the hotel in Shaolin will be under reconstruction, thus the summer retreat in China will be held at another place with powerful properties.

Important Notices:

1. Registration is required for all visitors to join the retreat. No one will be admitted to the retreat without prior registration.

2. Registration is open until June 15th.  Applications arriving after this date will not be accepted

3. To confirm your registration you must send us a scanned or electronic copy of your airline ticket.

To join the second group, you must have completed Zhong Yuan Qigong Levels 1 through 4, and at have attended least one previous retreat with Grandmaster Xu Mingtang.  If you do not meet the requirements but still want to join, please write to the organizers at the email below.

Please provide the following information, taking the utmost care not to make any typos:

1. Group:  first group, second group, or both.

2. Last Name (Surname) and First Name in English. Please make sure that your full name is shown in English EXACTLY as it appears in your passport. Please double check the spelling of your name in your passport very carefully, as we will register you at the Local Police Department and book plane tickets (if you need them) based on the information received from you. For the Chinese authorities every letter is very important. For example, our entire group was once detained at the airport because the name of one participant on the ticket showed ELIZAVETA, whereas in the passport it was YELISAVETA.  We ask that you take extra care in checking the spelling of your name, so that this very unpleasant situation does not reoccur in the future.

3. Date of Birth: Please carefully specify your date of birth; it is also necessary when ordering tickets and registration.

4. Passport Number: Please carefully indicate the number of your passport; it is also required when booking tickets and registration.

7. Accommodation Preferences

a. Beijing Hotel Preferences - Please indicate if you want to stay alone in the hotel in Beijing (you need to pay surcharge) or with a roommate. Surcharge for single room is not yet specified. Single room preference will be accommodated based on availability after all of the other participants are settled.  Note we do not guarantee that there will be enough space for single rooms.  

b. Shaolin Hotel Preferences - This year we will also stay in two different hotels. Our usual - hotel, for which there is no need to pay extra (Dharma) - and a new one (Zen) with the best living conditions available. For this one, however surcharge needs to be paid. Please note, that the amount of the surcharge indicated before may slightly change.Please let us know at which hotel you want to stay.

The bus-ride to Shaolin takes about 12 hours. Airplane costs about $100-120 USD. Taking the airplane is recommended for the senior participants, or for participants in poor health, in case the 12-hour bus ride may prove difficult for them.

Flights to Zhengzhou

Information for Those Flying between Beijing to Zhengzhou

Please note that all those that want to fly instead of taking the bus between Zhengzhou and Beijing need to purchase their tickets on their own, from their home country.  This year, retreat organizers will not be purchasing airline tickets for the participants.  The organizers will provide transporation from hotel to the Beijing airport, and fom Zhenzhou airport to Shaolin, and return.  However, the transportation will be provided only for the flights listed below.

You may also fly directly to Zhengzhou without stopping at the hotel in Beijing.  For example, arriving from USA, you can travel USA to Zhengzhou.  If you cannot make the recommended flight time, then book whatever is convenient.  Then, you will have to get your own taxi from the airport to Shaolin.  Last year the taxi cost 400 yan.  We will send you the address of Shaolin accomodations before the start of the retreat.

Note that Chinese domestic flights limit the weight of allowed luggage to 20 kg.
